  • Hydrocarbons -- The exhaust emissions of total hydrocarbons (a contributing factor in the localized formation of smog and ozone) are on average 67 percent lower for biodiesel than diesel fuel.

Studies have shown that in some cases, large fleets using biodiesel have been able to go longer between oil changes because the oil remains cleaner when biodiesel fuel is used. Most alternative fuels require modifications to a vehicle's engine to be used. Biodiesel, however, can be used in most diesel vehicles without having to make any changes to the engine (Modifications are only necessary for vehicles that are older than 1998).
